Vinyl Cladding and Aluminium Cladding for your Home's Exterior

Weatherproof your Home with High Quality Cladding Materials

The most important function of exterior cladding is to offer optimum protection for your home from elements. While choosing the right type of cladding to weatherproof your home, it is imperative to keep aesthetics in mind even as you evaluate products based on factors such as durability, maintenance, performance and budget.

Choosing the perfect siding is something you must never rush through. The best type of siding allows the interior walls to shed moisture by promoting enhanced air flow. Take time choosing high quality cladding materials for your home.

There are many different types of cladding materials available today.

Solid wood

Solid wood looks aesthetically appealing and lends a classic finish to homes. Extraction of wood is sustainable which means there is no pollution during the manufacturing process. Solid wood however is not fire-resistant and is susceptible to mould, rot from moisture, rodents and insects.

Leading manufacturers of solid wood weather proof cladding offer pre-painted wood products. They are of highest quality and easy to install. Painted to perfection with many coats on both sides, these cladding products have to be just cut to size and installed. To maintain quality of wood cladding, you must paint it before installation, if you plan on painting it yourself.

Composite wood

Waste wood is repurposed by manufacturers to make them usable. This type of wood is called composite wood and is used for different construction purposes. To get the actual wood finish, sawdust and small chips are steam pressed and given a realistic grained look. Industrial wastes that are usually used for landfill are used to make composite wood. As compared to conventional wood, composite wood cladding is easy to install as it does not have as many knots. With regard to risk and performance, composite wood faces the same issues as real wood. When it comes to durability, this type of wood lasts for at least 25 years.

Cedar shingles

If you are looking for still better quality cladding material to weather proof your home, cedar is your choice. This material lends an aesthetic appeal to your home and is resistant to rotting. Even if you do not maintain cedar cladding periodically, it will just change colour but will remain as strong and sturdy as ever. With over exposure to UV rays and other elements, cedar will turn grey if left untreated.

Cedar shingles are available in good length of over 18 inches. While installing cedar cladding, architects normally also use smaller pieces such as stumps from the forest. Though time consuming to install and expensive as compared to other types of cladding, cedar definitely scores over the rest in terms of quality and aesthetics.

Brick and stone

Brick and stone is a most preferred, high quality exterior cladding choice for skilled architects and discerning home owners. Offering excellent performance, this material requires minimal or no maintenance. It is highly resistant to insects, pests, fire and mould and is strong enough to withstand any weather condition. Though not easy to install and expensive brick and stone looks good and offers optimum protection for homes.

Stucco

Stucco is nothing but protecting the exterior walls with a thin cement coating. This is a simple and clean weather proofing option that offers protection from fire, rodents and pests. Stucco however is not easy to install and requires periodical maintenance. Resistance to weather is also not as much as other materials.

Acrylic coatings

Made of a combination of polystyrene, glass fibre and concrete, acrylic siding offers good protection for walls. This is a versatile material that offers enhanced protection against mould and pests. This cladding material is not easily available and is hence expensive.

Fiber cement

Fibre cement is a high quality exterior cladding material used for weather proofing for over ten decades. Originally, fibre cement was made with a combination of asbestos and cement. Today, healthier alternatives replace asbestos. This material is highly versatile which means it can be moulded to resemble any style, even wood.

One of the greatest advantages of using fibre cement is that it is extremely durable and optimally resistant to decay, insects and fire. As compared to northern climates, fibre cement performs better in dry, warm climates. During thaw or freeze cycle, maintenance must be regular as paint can chip off. Fiber cement continues to be a popular choice for exterior cladding as it is very durable and cost effective.

Metal

Metal is increasingly being used for exterior cladding as it offers enhanced weather proofing. Metal also performs well against parasites and mould. One of the greatest advantages of using metal for cladding is that it is versatile and extremely durable. Even when buildings are broken down, metal is recycled. Metal exterior cladding is reasonably priced and lasts for over 50 years.

There are many different types of metal sidings including aluminium siding, zinc siding, copper siding, galvanized steel siding and pre-finished steel siding.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is also a popular weatherproofing option for many predominantly because it is budget-friendly and highly durable. Vinyl offers enhanced protection from mould and pests and is optimally resistant to weathering. It is also easy to maintain and install. Vinyl is partly made of non-renewable natural gas. A major component that goes into the making of vinyl material is salt. To achieve fire ratings in constructions and developments, vinyl must be combined with other building materials.  This type of siding lasts for at least 40 years and is not very expensive.

Taking the help of the best architects and designing an energy efficient home is the first step towards protecting your property. Even after you install a high quality cladding material to weatherproof your home, it is important to ensure longevity by adding in good overhangs.

Overhangs protect the cladding material from getting wet when it rains. No matter which type of cladding you install, it is necessary to protect it from vagaries of weather. Most sidings deteriorate or age due to UV rays and rain. You can offer protection from these two factors with god overhangs. Taking measures to maintain the exterior wall cladding will make sure your home is protected for a long time from extremities of weather.
